Number Nine wakes up in a room containing several dead bodies with no memory of how he got there, who he is, or who killed the other men. He doesn't know if he can trust his only contact, a mysterious woman calling herself Five who feeds him information over the phone, but who he has no memory of ever meeting. Neither can he trust his own senses, since he’s suffering from nightmarish hallucinations conjured up by his damaged psyche. All he knows for certain is that he’s in a race against time to find answers and a cure for his condition as his mind crumbles around him. To save himself, Nine must uncover the secrets behind an experiment on former soldiers gone horribly wrong and the shocking truth about his own dark past. Will he be able to stop his headlong descent into madness, or are his problems all just in his head?

In the Dark is a fast-paced psychological thriller with a tightly-plotted mystery at its core that will keep readers guessing long after the startling conclusion.

4 out of 4 stars. This novel could actually be a really great action flick and it definitely keeps you on your toes. Each chapter ended on a cliffhanger that makes you want to tear your hair out wanting to know what happens next. Online Book Club review

In the Dark eBook J Scott Matthews

I haven't jumped like this book made me in the long long while. Packed with twist and turns and cliff hangers! Every twist, it makes you go, "NOOOHHHH!! That didn't just happen!" and you have to read more. Cliff hangers are so good that you want to shake the $*** out of author "WHHYyy are you doing this to me? Do you not want me to get some sleep?!?!" and you stay up late to get to the next chapter.

If you like thriller, this book is it.
I also recommend reading it twice. You rash through the first time reading it, and you will pick up a lot more hints and nuances second time you which will change what you thought real and not real!! AHHhh!!

In the Dark eBook J Scott Matthews Reviews

This is a psychological thriller done right. The pace is relentlessly quick, the mood is mysterious, and there are puzzles to be solved from the first chapter. The various threads in the story line based in different points in time connect seamlessly. This a hugely rewarding novel that I'm already looking forward to unpacking a second time around.
This was an excellent tale told well.

The author uses shifts from one time/character/setting to another time/character setting to keep you guessing until the end. The end was a little disappointing, possibly (not because it was badly done but because it wasn't who you were rooting for), but it was well worth the read.
In the tapestry of great American authors, there is a new voice. A voice of a new generation, my generation. Gripping, insightful, emotive and awe-inspiring, Mr. Matthews weaves a splendid tale that belongs with the pantheon of era-agnostic tales. Do yourself and favor and scoop up this as quickly as possible.
On the edge of my seat with suspense and fright at every turn in this one! It was such a treat to get this book for FREE from for Readers! It was an enjoyable read, and I'd like to thank the author/publisher for generously making the work available at no cost.
A very good psychological sci-fi thriller with a well developed plot and contains many twists and turns. The story is fast paced and keeps the reader guessing what's coming next. The characters are realistic and well developed. The ending was well done and came as a surprise. I highly recommend this book to all sci-fi thriller readers.
I received this book from the author thru Library Thing in exchange for an honest review, but also purchased it for my collection.
This book was okay but not one that I would rant and rave over. The idea is original and the psychological aspect is what caught my eye about it. It starts out strong - There are several patients being examined by number and Nine wakes up not even knowing his name. He has flashbacks from being a shoulder sprinkled throughout the book to sort of expose the past that he comes from.

One by one, patients begin to die under mysterious circumstances. The doctors claim they are strokes that aren't directly involved with the experiment they are doing but the patients left alive start to grow suspicious. Throw in a has-been psychiatrist who is trying to survive with his family that can't trust him, and the plot thickens when he too, is discovering that the experiment he is involved in isn't exactly what he signed on for. He grows a conscience and when more patients die, he decided to help two of the patients (Nine and Five are their names) in an escape attempt.

As stated above - it starts out strong but then it gets repetitive. As a reader, I understand they are hallucinating. It is mentioned on every other page just about. Also, the book goes from past to present without even indicating it. I followed along just fine but some readers might not be able to. Also, I also docked a star on this because there are some formatting issues as well as some grammatical issues that made it hard for me to understand who was talking. A character would talk and then a different character had dialogue in the same exact paragraph. That is a big no no in the writing world. If a new person speaks, you start a new paragraph. The author didn't even specify who was talking most of the time when a new person talked in the same sentence. So, I had to stop to figure out who was talking, pulling me from the action in the story.

With some minor fixes, this story can go from okay to good, and then good to great. The plot and idea are good. That's why I'm giving it 3 stars.
This is an amazing psycho thriller that will keep you guessing till the very end. I found myself reading faster and more often just to see what happened. You follow around ex-military after they're back from the war and undergoing experimental operations for PTSD. The procedures go horribly wrong and the world starts to fall apart for all involved. It's gripping, it's fast paced, it's one of my new favorites. Grab this one.
